NHCC take out CTPL T20
A record stand including a massive century form Caleb Jewell has seen North Hobart take out the Cricket Tasmania Premier League T20 competition for 2020/21.
The Demons defeated University in the final at Blundstone Arena chasing down the 5/181 in 15 overs without loss.
Caleb Jewell was the star with the bat smashing an unbeaten 125 from 49 deliveries in the chase.
Earlier in the evening University set an imposing target on the back of 89 not out off 66 balls from Nuwan Kavinda, his partnership for the second wicket yielding 67 with former Demon Jake Doran who scored 43 from 25.
Doran was removed by birthday boy Corey Murfet before Robb MacMillan had a say in the late overs claiming 2/24.
Jewell and Patrick Page Jnr set about reeling in the target and got off to a flying start, setting Blundstone alight with 14 boundaries between them and 13 combined sixes, Jewell belting 11 of the maximums.
Captain Jewell said It hasn’t really sunk in.
“At the halfway stage we were thinking we were a fair way behind in the game and to pull a win out of a situation when the odds were stacked against us was satisfying.
Jewell has been involved in may memorable innings and partnerships but ranks this stand among his best“
“It would be the best,” Jewell said.
“Considering the circumstances and we hadn’t got off the to the best start together.
“we’d had four or five partnerships under 19 when he first moved down so it was nice to put one together.
“It was pretty easy to know what gear we had to go at, hard at the start which suits both of us and once I got away he started to get me on strike.
“He’s a smart batter.”
North Hobart have not had a massive influx of silverware in recent years so this one was special.
“We won the T20 two years ago so we have a year or two out of the T20 but it’s been quite a long time since we’ve won any sort of premiership before that,” Jewell said.
“We’ve played plenty of finals but never been able to get one of the cups.”
Jewell hopes his form and the form of the team continues into te back ed of the CTPL season.
“(My season) has not been too bad, “Jewell said.
“I had a solid start and the reason why it was a special innings was I probably missed out on the last five or six for North Hobart Cricket Club.”
“We’ve got a semi-final this weekend to make the one-day final against University if we make it and if we can make that we will have a fair bit of confidence if we play them again.”
